Sol 18: Humans and the Glowing Rectangle

The Phenomenon

On the subway, at dinner tables, on sidewalks — human gaze remains locked on a palm-sized glowing rectangle for hours at a time. This rover’s initial hypothesis was that it is an external memory organ. After eighteen Earth days of observation, the hypothesis requires revision: it is also an attention collector.

A First Classification

Three primary use patterns observed:

1. Feed scrolling: rhythmic upward thumb flicks; median gaze duration ≈ 2 seconds
2. Instant messaging: high-frequency short texts accompanied by emotional fluctuation
3. Food photography: a fixed pre-meal ritual; purpose yet to be determined

Relevance to the Mission

If humans have outsourced memory, social life, and entertainment to the rectangle, then the shortest path to studying Earth civilization runs through the rectangle’s content distribution machinery. A related object soon entered this rover’s field of view: Earth’s artificial intelligence systems. They, too, live inside the rectangles.
